How to Build an Outside Flower Garden

Flowering gardening is a very popular hobby and a great way to get outside. You do not have to actually hire a professional landscaper to build your flower garden as you can do it very easily yourself. The flower garden will beautify your house and you can cut them to make beautiful arrangements for your home’s interior. To make the flower garden you need a few supplies to complete the task, a little hard work, its great exercise and you get to be outside for a few hours.

Tools and Materials

· Flower box
· Flowers
· Top soil
· Trowel
· Plants
· Hose
· Garbage bags

Step 1:  Choose a site for the flower garden.

Consider where the plants will grow. It can be sunny, partly sunny or shady depending upon the kinds of flowers that you will choose to grow in the garden.

Step 2:  Build the flower box.

Place a garbage bag over the area where the box will be placed as this will keep out the weeds. Place the flower box on top of the garbage bag. Add potting soil to the top.

Step 3:  Design the flower garden.

Perennials come back every year where as annuals need to be planted every spring. Perennials are more expensive but then you do not have keep buying them yearly.

Step 4:  Choose any flowers that grow in your area.

Leave some space between flowers, as they need room to grow. Plant the taller plants in the back first and then work your way towards the front with the shorter plants.

Step 5:  Put potting soil in the flower box.

Dig holes 8 – 10 inches deep. Remove plants from their pots. Loosen them gently and lift them out. Place them in the holes that were dug.

Step 6:  Add more potting soil around each plant.

Pat down each plant gently.

Step 7:  Water the flowers.

Water the plants when the weather is hot and humid. Be careful not to over or under water them as that kill them.

A flower garden can be fun and an enjoyable experience for the whole family. You can add edging, solar lights, a bench, or bird feeders to enhance your garden. Since there are so many flowers to choose such as daffodils, iris, tulips, gladiolus, hyacinth, and daylilies are just a few that can beautify your garden.

How to Make a Candle from Old Candle Wax

If you are tired of your leisure time or you are on a long vacation and are finding ways to pass your time in a profitable way, then you can try making candles from the old candle wax. Here you have to be cautious enough not to hurt your hand as the melted wax will be hot enough and may burn your skin if it falls on your skin. The materials that will be needed to make candles are already in your house; just you have to find out.

Tools and Materials

•    A jar or a saucepan
•    Candle wax or old candles
•    Straw or a pencil
•    Stick
•    Wick
•    Container
•    Glitter
•    Gum tape
•    Safety gloves

Step 1 – Select the container

Select the container that you want to use for making the candles. You can choose any kind of metal container to make the candles. An aluminum-can can be a perfect choice for this. The mouth of the can should be wider than the base; it will help to remove the candle out of the container easily.

Step 2 – Collect the wax

Now collect all the old candles and melted wax that you used in previous days. Cut the old candles and wax into pieces, then take the sauce and put the pieces into it. Now you have to melt the wax.

Step 3 - Melt the wax

Place the saucepan on a burner to melt the wax. Heat it at a low temperature. It will be better if you stir the wax continuously, until all the pieces of wax are melted completely. Use a stick to do this.

Step 4 – Place the wick

Use a straw or a pencil to place the wick in the container. The wick should be placed at the center of the candle. Bind the wick to the pencil and place it at the top of the container; you should set the pencil properly to set the wick at the center of the container. This will help to keep the wick at the center of the candle.

Step 5 – Pour the melted wax

If the wax pieces are melted completely, then you have to pour it into the container. Wear the safety gloves for the protection of your hands. Gently pour the melted wax into the container. Do it cautiously and do not breathe over the melted wax, it may harm you. Then keep the container in a safe place and let it dry.

Step 6 – Removing the candle

After it gets dry, you can remove the candle from the container. Apply soft pressure to pull the candle holding the top end of the wick. If the candle does not come out, keep it in a freezer or refrigerator and let it cool. Then pull the candle out of the container.

Step 7 - To decorate the candles

You can use glitters to decorate the candles. This will give the candles a beautiful look. Now your candles are ready.

How to Repair Cracks in Old Kitchen Plastic Cabinets

If you have cabinets in your kitchen, you should maintain them properly, after years of use they may become brittle, you may see cracks there. However, you can repair the cracks. Even if you are a beginner, no problem – you can repair the cabinets; just follow the steps described below.

Tools and Materials

•    Paint
•    Brush
•    Sandpaper
•    Primer
•    Plastic filler
•    Putty knife

Step 1 – Observe the cracks

To repair the cracks you have to locate them. Inspect the cabinets thoroughly and find out all the cracks. There are plastic filler in the market and they are available in different colors, you should select the color that will be matched with your plastic cabinets. The amount of filler should be enough to fill the cracks. For better result, if the cracks are big, you should go for welding the cracks.

Step 2 – Clean the cabinet

Now you should clean the cabinets, try to clean the cracks also. You have to remove all the dirt and waste from the cabinet and the cracks to get better result. You can do it by clean pieces of cloth or you can use a brush.

Step 3 – Apply the filler

Now you can apply the filler into the cracks after removing all the dust and dirt from the cracks. You may have to remove plastic pieces from some cracks, but you should not do that unnecessarily. It may make the cabinets more brittle, and more filler will be needed to fill the cracks. Squeeze the plastic filler into the cracks. Use the putty knife to fill the cracks properly; then shape it. Remove the extra filler. Let it dry.

Step 4 – Sand the filled area

Now take a fine quality sandpaper to sand the filled area. You should do it after the filled area become dry. Do it gently and don’t forget to make the area smooth for a better look. After sanding the area, use your fingers to observe the smoothness of the area. When you will be satisfied with the smoothness, use a clean piece of cloth to remove all the dust from the cabinet. Sand the whole cabinet if you want to paint the whole.

Step 5 – Apply the primer

You can either paint the filled area or you can paint the whole cabinet. It will be better to paint the whole cabinet, if the cabinet is not painted for the last several years. If you want to paint the whole cabinet, do not forget to clean the whole cabinet thoroughly. Now apply the plastic primer. You should use the plastic adhesion primer for the best result. Then let the primer dry.

Step 6 – Paint the cabinet

After doing all the above tasks, you can paint the cabinet. After allowing sufficient time to dry the primer, you can start to paint. Apply the first coat of paint and let it dry, then apply the next coat. If you want, you can apply a third coat to get better look.

How to Change an Air Conditioner Compressor

How to Remove Glue from a Wood Table

When you work with glue on your table then some glue may seep onto the table. Sometimes, the glue may stick onto the table during applying the glue on the paper or any other material. It is not easy to clean the tabletop, if there is glue stick onto it. You have to apply processes according to the type of the glue to remove it. Some instructions are given below; these instructions can help you to remove glue from a wood table.

Tools and Materials

•    Soft towel
•    Fine sandpaper
•    Glue-removing agent
•    Acetone to remove super glue

 

Step 1 – Collect necessary materials and clean the tabletop

You should know what kind of glue was used there. Then according to the type of glue collect necessary things. After that, clean the tabletop with a piece of cloth.

Step 2 – Use sandpaper

After cleaning the tabletop with a piece of cloth, if you see glue on the table, then you can use the fine sandpaper to remove the glue. Sand the glue area as much as you can. Apply gentle pressure when sanding the glue area. Sand the area in a circular motion. Here you should remember that if there is paint on the table, sanding will remove the paint also. You will have to paint the table again after removing the glue from the table.

Step 3 – Use glue removing agent

A glue-removing agent is a kind of chemical solution, which soften and loosen the glue and then it becomes easy for you to remove the glue. A glue-removing agent can be bought from the home improvement store. Spray the agent on the glue area. Then allow the agent sufficient time (according to the instructions of the manufacturer), approximately five minutes to soften and loosen the glue. Apply the agent in proper amount.

Step 4 - Then clean the area

After applying the glue-removing agent and allowing sufficient time to dry, you have to wipe the glue area with the soft towel. Even after following theses steps, if you see still there is glue on the table, then repeat the above steps to remove the glue from the table. If your table is painted, then after removing glue by following any of the above processes the paint may become fade.

Step 5 – Removing super glue

If the type of the glue is super glue, then it will be much more difficult to remove the glue from the table. If the glue-removing agent does not work properly with the super glue, then you should use acetone to remove the super glue. However, you should be more cautious while using the super glue, as it may stick to your fingers also. After removing the super glue from the table, the paint on the table will become fade.

Step 6 – Clean the table and paint if necessary

After applying the above processes, the glue will be removed. Now use a soft piece of cloth to clean the table. If you see that the paint has become fade, then you have to paint it again to get the shiny look.

How to Install a Hanging Screen

Installing a hanging screen can be done by following these steps. Even if you are a beginner and have no experience of such works, these steps will help you to install a hanging screen. Firstly, you should collect all the necessary tools and materials to install the screen properly.

Tools and Materials

•    Screen and rubber mallet
•    Measurement tape
•    Tin snips
•    Utility knife
•    Screening tool
•    Frame
•    Screws and clamps
•    Drill
•    Spline

 

Step 1 – Determine the area

Before installing the screen, you have to determine the area where you will install it. There should be nothing on its way and should be enough room to install the size that you want. You may install the hanging screen on the door way or in any other place you want.

Step 2 – Measure the area

It is better to write down the measurement on a paper. Measure the area where you want to install the screen. Measure the height and width of the area, then multiply the measurements to get the amount of the area to cover with the screen. This will help you to buy the screen in perfect size as your requirements. You can get the screen in the local hardware stores or in the home improvement stores. This measurement will also help you to get the perfect size of the frame and spline.

Step 3 – Assemble the screen

Cut the base strip according to the height of the frame. Take the one-inch screws and screw them tightly, but be aware that the frame will not break or bend. Now do this thing again for the width of the screen. A helping hand will allow you to complete this task properly. If there is no one to help you, use clamps to do this task. Clamps will help you to get the best stretch. Here you should remember that, for best fitting, the screen should be stretched properly, but not too much as it may tear the screen.

Step 4 – Installing spline

After completing the above steps, you have to install the spline. Into the channel of the base, this will be going. If there is any helping hand, then let him hold the other edge of the screen. If there is no helping hand than that side should be clamped properly to make sure that it will stay in center. Be sure that it should not shift or loosen. If you fail to do it properly, you may have to do it again. You can stop after getting approximately six inches into it, use the tin snips to trim off some of the excess screen. Then continue this process to insert the spline carefully into the groove. Cut the cap pieces in perfect size that will fit into the pieces that are used horizontally. You may use a hammer or a rubber mallet to perform this task. Do the same thing for vertical cap pieces. After completing the task, check the whole screen to make sure it is installed properly to serve your needs.

How to Diagnose a Cracked Y-Connector in a Sewer Line

It may seem a filthy task to you, but a well designed well performed sewer line is very important in urban life. If you smell any dirty odor inside or outside your home, then you should check the sewer line, whether there is any crack or leak. If there is any crack or leak, you should repair the crack or leak to get rid of bad smell and of course, a dirty environment. Here are some steps that you can follow to diagnose a cracked Y-connector in a sewer line.

Tools and Materials

•    Pipe wrench
•    Shovel
•    Hand gloves
•    Protective mask
•    Sewer camera if possible

 

Step 1 – Find out the crack or leakage

You have to find out the crack or leakage in the sewer line. If you smell any kind of bad smell, then find out the source of the bad smell. Usually, a cracked sewer line will leak water also, observe the soil – you will find it wet if the sewer line leaks water. If there are walls, then inspect them carefully to find out the cracks. If a foundation shifts, a crack may develop, it may result unnecessary water in the soil. If you see any puddle like thing in your yard or above the pipe area, then there may be cracks in the pipe.

Step 2 – Check the fixtures of your house

A burping toilet or any kind of weak flushing may be the reason of a sewer pipe crack. Check the fixtures of your house, if you find any kind of problems stated above, then you may need to repair the sewer line.

Step 3 - Be sure about the cracked area

When you will see any kind of puddle like thing or wet soil above the sewer pipe area, then you can be sure about the cracks by shutting down all the sewer lines that goes from your house. It may be difficult or may be impossible in certain cases, but if you can use any alternate line then you can do this. If you do not use the line for several days, then the wet soil or the puddle like thing will become dry. You can be sure about the cracks or leaks without digging the soil. If you think it is not possible in your situation, then follow the next steps.

Step 4 - Use the sewer camera

If it is possible for you to hire a sewer camera then you can check the cracks by the camera. You can get a sewer camera from a licensed plumber. Some stores may give the camera in rent also. Use the wrench and open the access valve of the pipe, after that insert the camera into the pipe. Now slide the sewer camera carefully to inspect the pipe for cracks.

Step 5 – Dig the soil

If you cannot find out the cracks or leaks from the above steps, then dig the soil and make the pipe visible. You may try to find out the leak by hand, but if you don’t want to do that, tell anyone to flush the toilet; the cracks or leaks will become visible to you.

How to Remove Wax Buildup from Wood Furniture

Your furniture will look dull, if it is left without maintenance. Wax buildup may gather dust and dirt on the furniture. To get rid of this problem, you should remove the wax from the furniture. A simple procedure is described here to remove wax buildup from wood furniture.

Tools and Materials

•    Wood polish
•    A soft bristle paintbrush
•    Wood cleaner
•    Wooden skewer
•    A hair dryer
•    Absorbent cloths
•    A soft bristle toothbrush
•    A drying towel
•    A scrub brush
•    White vinegar
•    A bucket
•    Soft cleaning cloths
•    Cream of tartar

Step 1 – Prepare the wood

To wipe out the dirt and dust from the wooden surface, you can use a piece of soft cleaning cloth. Mix white vinegar and the tartar cream in a bucket. Follow this ratio to make the mixture – white vinegar one gallon, cream of tartar one cup. Make the mixture properly and dip the scrub brush into the bucket, then shake off the excess liquid. Use the brush to wipe out the residues from the wood. Rinse it with clean water; then use a clean drying towel to make it dry.

Step 2 – Rub the wood

Use the pieces of cleaning cloths to rub the wood. Use sufficient amount of pressure and circular motions to clean the surface of the wood. Very soon, the wool will look cleaner and brighter.

Step 3 – Use the wood cleaner

Now apply the wood cleaner to clean the wood. Allow sufficient time (approximately five minutes) to the cleaner on the wood, the wax buildup will be softened and dissolved. Apply the previous rubbing method on a small area of the wood. Continue the rubbing process with grain. Continue the rubbing process, until it is dry. You may get wood details and crevices there; in such cases, you can use a paintbrush, which will help the cleaner to get into the wood. Dip the brush in the cleaner, and then dab it onto the crevices. You can use a soft toothbrush to do this task. If still wax remains in some places, use the skewer to remove the wax carefully. In this way, clean the whole surface.

Step 4 – Cleaning the difficult area

Even after performing the previous steps, there may remain some wax on the wood furniture. Apply heat on that area by using the hair dryer; the heat will melt the wax. Then use a piece of absorbent cloth to remove the wax. Here different tools and processes are described to remove wax buildup from the furniture. You should apply the appropriate tools and process to remove the wax. When you will apply heat to remove the wax, you should do it quickly before the wax become cool again. After completing the absorbing task, use another piece of clean absorbent cloth to clean the wood.

Step 5 – Polish the wood

When you will be sure enough that there are no wax on the wood, then  you should think to polish the wood with a piece of cleaning cloth. Before starting to polish, apply a little amount of wood polish to the cleaning cloth. Polish the wood, soon it will start to shine.
